What happens to my pet when they have an orthopedic problem?

Orthopedic problems affect your pet’s musculoskeletal system which is needed for movement. When your pet has an orthopedic problem they experience difficulty jumping, bending and running which makes them avoid activities that involve movement. You may notice your pet has sudden weight loss, swollen joints, limping or stiffness.

Can orthopedic issues be prevented?

Yes and no. Some orthopedic issues are due to your pet’s age, size or breed. For instance, larger breeds and older dogs are more likely to develop hip dysplasia. Your pet’s lifestyle and diet can contribute to them having orthopedic issues as they can exacerbate wear and tear in their skeletal system. Additional orthopedic problems can develop from your pet’s health history or injuries.

Are you able to perform orthopedic surgeries on pets?

Absolutely! Our veterinarians are experienced in performing orthopedic surgeries. They conduct patella luxation surgery, pinning for broken bones, splints for pulled tendons, amputations and ruptured cranial cruciate (ACL) ligament repair. More complex procedures are referred to a board-certified surgeon.

What are other ways to treat orthopedic issues?

We don’t always recommend surgery with orthopedic problems as sometimes pets are not healthy enough to withstand the procedures. Alternatives to surgery may include:

  • Pain medication
  • Joint supplements
  • Weight management
  • Rehabilitation
